Description
Slavery in Ancient Rome explores the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of slavery in the Roman world from the Republic through Late Antiquity. The course examines the diverse roles enslaved people played while analyzing legal frameworks, manumission practices, and the intersection of slavery with Roman identity, class, and power. Students will engage with literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources to understand both the institution of slavery and the lived experiences of the enslaved as well as the enduring impact of slavery on Roman society.
