After slumbering in the self-imposed isolation from the world for 260 years, Japan defended her island countryagainst China in 1894 and Russia in 1905.Japan's speedy westernization, its cultural and technological advances were phenomenal. As the nation grew, so did its problems with America.

Sachi Ann Welsh, is a native of Tokyo. She has worked at the U.S. Embassy and for major American news agencies in the Far East. She has a master's degree from Florida State University and has taught Japanese language and culture at USF and the University of Tampa.
